THE Beijing Paralympic flame will be lit by the sun at the Temple of Heaven at 10:30 a.m. today, marking the start of a nine-day relay through 11 cities.
The flame will be lit from the rays of the sun captured in a concave mirror in the same way the Olympic flame was lit.
The Paralympic flame will be lit at the temple to help integrate heaven and humankind, a core concept of traditional Chinese culture, embodying the Chinese people’s pursuit of harmony between humankind and nature, according to Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).
From Aug. 29 to Sept. 6, the nine-day Paralympic torch relay will be conducted simultaneously along two routes, Ancient China and Modern China.
On Sept. 5, the two Paralympic torch relays will converge in Beijing and reach the National Stadium for the opening ceremony Sept. 6.
There will be a total of 850 torchbearers.
Organizers said that so far, more than 480,000 tickets had been sold, 32,000 of them to disabled spectators, and their families and friends. Of the total 1.66 million tickets available for the Paralympics, the best seats will go to disabled spectators.
The ticket prices have been kept low, from 30 yuan (US$4.29) to 80 yuan, and people can book through the official Web site until Sept. 14.

Schwarzer breaks OR in Men's 50km Walk

Alex Schwarzer of Italy won the Men's 50km Walk gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a time of three hours and 37.09 minutes on August 22.
The 24-year-old Italian broke the previous Olympic record of three hours and 38.29 minutes set by Vyacheslav Ivanenko of the USSR ten years ago. With this achievement, he adds his first Olympic gold to his trophy shelf, next to bronzes earned at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships.
"It's the best, it's the highest level. I'm delighted," Schwarzer said excitedly when talking about his gold medal.
"This is for my grandfather who died in July. I'm very sad about it. He's been there for me my whole life, but now I'm sure he is happy," he added.
The silver medal went to Jared Tallent of Australia in three hours 39.27 minutes. Tallent won bronze in the Men's 20km Walk at these Games on Saturday, August 16.
"This is what you do it for. Just warming up this morning and thinking of all the years of hard work that come down to this. I can't believe it - two medals at the Olympics," said Tallent.
Denis Nizhegorodov of Russia took bronze in three hours 40.14 minutes.
"I feel very disappointed. I don't know why. I don't think I had any technical problems or mistakes. I got a silver four years ago (Athens 2004 Olympic Games), but now it's only a bronze. It's such a pity," said Nizhegorodov.
The Belarusian team won the Canoe/Kayak Flatwater Kayak Four (K4) 1000 meter

This is not only the second gold medal won by Belarus on Friday, but also Belarus' second Canoe/Kayak gold medal in Olympic history. Just 15 minutes earlier, Andrei Bahdanovich and Aliaksandr Bahdanovich made the breakthrough for Belarus by winning the K2 1000m final.
The Slovakia team comprised of Richard Riszdorfer, Michal Riszdorfer, Erik Vlcek and Juraj Tarr trailed 0.879 seconds behind the winners. These four paddlers took a bronze medal in Athens.
The German team made up by Lutz Altepost, Norman Brockl, Torsten Eckbrett and Bjorn Goldschmidt finished third with a time of 2:56.676 minutes. Germany's Men's K4 team took one silver medal each in Sydney and Athens.
Italian legend Antonio Rossi failed to grab a medal with his team, who finished the course fourth. The 39-year-old has won five Olympic medals since 1992, including three gold medals. He was also the flag-bearer of the Italian delegation in the opening ceremony.

today Chausson wins first BMX gold,Chausson is Mountain bike star
Chausson

Anne-Caroline Chausson of France won the gold medal while pre-race favorite Shanaze Reade of Great Britain crashed out to finish last in the Women's race as BMX made its Olympic debut on Friday, August 21.
Laetitia le Corguille of France avoided three pile-ups in the final to claim silver, while US athlete Jill Kintner edged Sarah Walker of New Zealand to score bronze.
Reade overcame a first-run crash in the semifinals to qualify for the gold medal round and roared into the decisive first corner in the front position on Friday.
Ex-mountain bike downhill world champion Chausson took a low, inside line to sneak past her British rival and surged into the lead as two others crashed in their wake.
Two-time defending world champion Reade fought to within a bike's length of Chausson going into the final corner and tried a risky, inside-line pass. She clipped Chausson's rear tire and crashed out of the medals.
Le Corguille, first in her qualifying heat, took advantage of the opening to dart past Reade to claim silver.
Kintner, a three-time Four-Cross world champion riding with injured knee ligaments, surged late to fend off Walker for the bronze.
Chausson, 30, has taken the first-ever Olympic gold medal in BMX after coming out of retirement in 2006 once BMX earned its Olympic-sport designation.
Chausson won 13 downhill, dual slalom and Four-Cross world titles in mountain biking, but the downhill discipline is not an Olympic medal sport.
